The PhD program is a research based program with two required courses: MICB506 and MICB548.  Students finish their programs, on average, between 4-6 years. PhD student enrollment within the Department is approximately 60 students with an additional 30 Master students.

PhD students have their tuition covered for the first 4 years by the Faculty of Science and the UBC Graduate Student Initiative. 
Applicants are required to locate a research supervisor to gain admission to the Department.

Applicants without a Masters degree are required to have a minimum grade point average of first class standing or A-. Applicants with a Masters are required to have a minimum GPA of 76% or B+ average throughout their masters.
