Seminar Title: From the Lab to the Lecture Hall: Antibiotic Resistance and Inclusive Teaching
Speaker Bio: Haley Zubyk completed her BHSc in 2017 and is completing her doctoral studies in the Wright Lab at McMaster University. Her research focuses on exploring the biosynthesis of the peptide antibiotic edeine and discovering novel mechanisms of fluoroquinolone resistance. In recognition of her research excellence, Haley was awarded a prestigious NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship.
Haley has intentionally combined her biomedical PhD studies with meaningful teaching experiences to develop scientific and pedagogical expertise. She has experience as a teaching assistant in an experiential-learning laboratory-based course and as a sessional faculty member teaching Microbial Genetics and Immunology in the Department of Biology and the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster. These opportunities allowed her to gain experience in large undergraduate classes and small student-centred inquiry-based focus groups using problem- based learning. Her teaching in Microbial Genetics earned her a nomination by her students for the Macademics Excellence in Teaching Award, which recognizes the all-around teaching performance of the instructor, placing her among the top 4 candidates among more than 200 faculty members in the Faculty of Science.
To further develop her teaching skills, Haley has earned a Teaching and Learning Theory and Inquiry Certificate of Completion from McMaster's MacPherson Institute for Leadership, Innovation, and Excellence in Teaching. She also contributed as an educational instructor for one of the certificate courses, aiding fellow educators in refining their teaching methodologies.
Lastly, Haley actively engages in discipline-based research, focusing on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. To reflect her commitment to evidence-based teaching and enhancing students' learning experiences, Haley's current focus involves investigating how a senior laboratory thesis influences undergraduate students' professional growth as researchers and shapes their career aspirations.
Overall, Haley’s experience blends biomedical research with a commitment to fostering enriched learning experiences for future generations of students.
