Darlene Birkenhead received a Faculty of Science Achievement Award for her outstanding contributions to our graduate program. This is so well deserved for the incredible way in which she supports all of our graduate students. Tim Jayme, MISA President, also received a Faculty of Science Achievement Award for initiating a large number of activities that enhanced our undergraduates' UBC experience. Rachel completed her Master's degree in October 2012 and was hired as a instructor at Columbia College teaching first year biology.
Shaan successfully defended her PhD in July of 2012 and starting a post-doc in Dr. Phil Hansbro’s lab at the University of Newcastle in Australia. She is working on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) respiratory infections and lung microbiome.
Andrea successfully defended her thesis in April 2012 and immediately began working as a Research Manager in Dr. Mel Krajden's Lab at BC Centre for Disease Control. Her research is focused on the molecular epidemiology of Hepatitis C virus in clinical patients and injection drug using cohorts in British Columbia using Sanger and next generation sequencing technologies.
