Seminar Title: "Elevating Academic Excellence By Mastering The Microbiome Through The Years"

Speaker Bio: Evelyn Sun is a dedicated researcher and educator who earned her doctoral degree at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2018, under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Hancock. Her research focused on bacterial motility, specifically the novel phenomenon termed "surfing," and its implications in antimicrobial resistance and pathogenesis. During her graduate studies, Evelyn engaged in a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning project within the science communication seminar course, SCIE 113. This experience marked her entry into formal teaching, where she served as a sessional lecturer, discovering a newfound passion for education. In 2019, Evelyn joined the Department of Microbiology and Immunology (MBIM) at UBC as a post-doctoral teaching fellow under the supervision of Dr. Marcia Graves and Dr. David Oliver. Her work focused on evaluating a longstanding model for course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), resulting in publications in prestigious journals such as Frontiers in Microbiology and the Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education (JMBE). Transitioning into a Lecturer position in 2020, Evelyn spearheaded the development and redesign of two core courses, including MICB 211, a second-year Foundations in Microbiology course. Her innovative approach incorporated literature-derived data-focused case studies, providing students with opportunities to apply learned concepts while concurrently enhancing their data literacy skills. Evelyn's commitment to advancing student learning continued with her involvement in the development of MICB 475, a data science research course. She led the renewal of the course, transforming it into a hybrid format aligned with Universal Design for Learning principles to foster an inclusive learning environment. Over the past two years as a Lecturer, Evelyn has significantly contributed to the MBIM majors program, transforming core courses into inclusive learning experiences that empower students to thrive academically while bridging the gap between scientific exploration and effective pedagogy.
