Seminar Title: Phagocytosis of pathogens and content: An active learning approach

Speaker Bio: Dr. Jasmin Chahal completed her Ph.D. in 2020 in Microbiology & Immunology (MIMM) at McGill University, where she investigated the role of the liver-specific microRNA and its interaction with Hepatitis C virus. She was also a McGill site coordinator of Let’s Talk Science, a Canadian education and outreach organization. That same year, she completed the American Society for Microbiology Certificate in Teaching Undergraduate Biology. In May 2020, Jasmin began her appointment as a Faculty Lecturer in the MIMM department at McGill and was promoted to Assistant Professor (Ranked Contract Academic Staff) in 2021. Her first task as Faculty was to design and teach a pilot SEA-PHAGES class (Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science), a course-based undergraduate research experience, over zoom. With the success of the course, Jasmin developed two new courses to include the wet-lab and bioinformatics of SEA-PHAGES. She also redesigned the second module of the Molecular Microbiology lab, a third-year MIMM course, to be inquiry-based and include hands-on experience in understanding the bacterial CRISPR-Cas9 antiviral defense mechanism. Throughout her appointment, Jasmin coordinated and/or lectured in 9 different MIMM courses. She received both the Teaching Award and Mentor Award at the MIMM department Gala for three consecutive years. She was also nominated for the Faculty Award for Teaching Innovation in 2021 and 2023 for implementing innovative teaching strategies and redesigning courses to include more active learning and various assessment designs. Since her appointment at McGill, Jasmin has attended and presented at multiple Office of Science Education and Teaching & Learning Services workshops. She is continuously on the lookout for new strategies in course design, teaching and assessments in the field of Microbiology & Immunology.
