What is your main research focus? (If you have multiple, please describe!) 

My main research focus is understanding the molecular mechanism of how enteric pathogens outcompete the microbial community living within the gut to establish infection. More specifically, I work with the type VI secretion system (T6SS), a powerful anti-microbial weapon that acts as a crossbow to deliver toxins into target cells.

I am also interested in understanding how pathogenic E. coli reprogram cell host processes by injecting a complex arsenal of proteins directly into host cells using the type III secretion system (T3SS), a needle-like structure. My research findings will help further our understanding of the bacteria-host interaction with opportunities to develop novel treatments for infectious diseases.

What do you love about being a scientist?

I love having the opportunity to ask questions and work towards finding the answers from the most basic to more complex processes in nature. I am thrilled to know that my curiosity and passion for making new discoveries can contribute to solve global health problems and improve patients' lives.

What are some of your favorite things to do outside of being a Postdoc? (Hobbies, secret talents, etc.)

I enjoy playing ukulele; the sound of this instrument reminds me of my hometown in the southern region of Mexico. When I am not in the lab, I like hiking and skiing, which I realized I enjoy a lot since moving to Vancouver.
